How to apply to become a resident at St Mary's
St Mary's has 39 almshouses and vacancies are only rarely available. Since January 2023 only five almshouses have become available to let. Prospective applicants who wish to apply for residence are welcome to so but should be aware that application process, even if successful, will take several months and in some case years.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to study the eligibility criteria below and the accompanying notes for applicants which are provided in the downloadable document below. Where possible applications should be submitted on line rather than on paper.
Applications received will be acknowledged and assessed by a Trustees panel which meets twice yearly. In 2026 these assessments will take place in April and again in October.
To be eligible for residency applicants must:
- Be of limited financial means.
- Be in sufficiently good health to cook and housekeep for themselves.
- Be of good character.
- Have resided for the five years preceding their application in an ecclesiastical parish in the Diocese of Chichester, any part of which is within 15 miles of the Cathedral Church of Chichester.
- Be in sympathy with the religion of the Church of England.
Appointments to view St Mary's and any apartments, when available, can be arranged by contacting: supportteam@stmarysalmshouses.org.uk / 01243 783377.
